Medical payments is an optional coverage that you can get on your auto insurance that can help take care of some costs that can be inflicted if somebody is injured in your vehicle.
With medical payments, it pays the amount that you have—like let’s say $5000 in medical payments on your auto insurance. It pays up to $5000 per person in the vehicle. In some states, it’s even double if the person is wearing their seatbelt. Also, with medical payments, this is a coverage that can take of things if you don’t have health insurance.
You would have that coverage to take care of it. And even if you have your health insurance, a lot of times, with health insurance, you have deductibles. A lot of people may have $1000 deductible for their health insurance policy, and then they might even be responsible for 20% of the remainder of a claim.
So, let’s give an example. If I go into the hospital because I’ve been injured, and I have $5000 worth of bills, I have to pay my $1000 deductible, and let’s say I have to pay 20%, that would mean that I have to pay $1800 out of my pocket for that $5000 bill.
Now, if I had medical payments on my auto insurance, I don’t have a deductible on it. And even if I have as low as $2000 in medical payments, I’m going to be able to cover that $1800 for my health insurance deductibles.
So, there’s not going to be any out-of- pocket expense. The other great thing about medical payments is this is a coverage that’s paid out immediately. You do not have to wait until the claim is solved. With injuries, a lot of times, you have to wait until after you’ve gone to the hospital. If there’s physical therapy and things like that, there can be a delay to get that claim closed.
With medical payments, you don’t have to wait for that claim to be closed. You can go ahead and get that money taken care of right away. And that can make sure to offset things to make sure your credit score
stays up, and you don’t have to worry about that. Another great fact about medical payments is it’s a coverage that follows you. You don’t even have to be on your own vehicle. You could be riding in someone else’s vehicle. And if they did not opt for our medical payments and it was a coverage where it was their fault, there wouldn’t be any coverage.
But if you had your medical payments, you could go ahead and take care of your deductibles from your health insurance and give you an extra benefit there (where if you didn’t have health insurance, paying for that doctor bill if you had to go).
Even if you’re walking on the street, and you’re hit by somebody else, you can go ahead and get your medical payments.
So, that coverage is going to follow you. And it’s very expensive. Most people will opt to take it off because they think they’re saving money because it’s not required. But most of the time, medical payments can be less than $20 a year for up to $2000 in coverage. So it can be a great benefit for you and make you save money in the long run.
